Agoos hooks Goal of the Week

A left-footed free-kick from 25 yards out by San Jose Earthquakes defender Jeff Agoos in a 3-1 victory over the MetroStars last Saturday was voted by fans as the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week for the week ending June 12, 2004 (Week 11). The Earthquakes captain's strike was his 11th career goal, four of them coming off a restart.

The weekly Goal of the Week winner is determined from a selection of finalists through a fan vote conducted on the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week section of Major League Soccer's official web site: - (56K|384K). Agoos edged out teammate Brian Mullan's individual run to goal by gaining 26 percent of the vote compared to 24 percent. Creative goals by the Columbus Crew's Jeff Cunningham, a diving header by the Revolution's Clint Dempsey and Galaxy midfielder Andreas Herzog's left-footed strike also received votes for their efforts.

Veteran defender Agoos, who is the only player to have won five MLS Cups, tee'd up a free kick from 25 yards. After a touch by Mulrooney to widen the angle from outside the left center of the box, Agoos lifted the ball over the defensive wall and placed it inside the right post, leaving MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Wells with no chance. In 2003, Agoos scored on a free kick against the Crew on May 17, and then from the penalty spot on Aug. 26 versus Dallas.
