Supporters' Shield to be decided in final game for sixth time in Major League Soccer history

The Supporters' Shield

The biggest regular season MLS game of all-time? It'll arguably go down on Saturday afternoon when the Seattle Sounders face the LA Galaxy to decide the Supporters' Shield (2:30 ET; NBCSN/TSN2).

Since the Sounders' comeback fell just short of three points against the Galaxy on Sunday night at StubHub Center, history is set to be made at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. For the first time in MLS history, the two teams fighting for the Supporters' Shield will face each other in their final regular season game.

It's only the sixth time in MLS history that the Shield has been undecided heading into the final game for each time. Bad news for LA: in four of the previous five occasions, the team leading the race heading into the final game took home the trophy.

Below are the other five years, and winners, with only the 2001 Miami Fusion able to catch the leaders from behind. It should also be noted that that year's season was cut short because of the attacks on September 11, 2001.

2013: New York Red Bulls (59pts) over SKC (58pts), Portland (57pts), RSL (56pts)
Red Bulls win vs. Fire to clinch Shield

2010: LA Galaxy (59pts) over RSL (58pts)
Galaxy win vs. FC Dallas to clinch shield

2004: Columbus Crew (49pts) over Kansas City (49pts)
Crew tie vs. Colorado Rapids to clinch Shield on goals scored

2001: Miami Fusion (53pts) over Chicago (53pts)
Fusion win vs. D.C. United to overtake Chicago, who tied. Clinch Shield due two wins over Fire head-to-head

2000: Kansas City Wizards (57pts) over Chicago (57pts), New York/New Jersey (54pts)
Wizards tie vs. Tampa Bay Mutiny to clinch Shield on goal differential
