The US national team is through to the knockout round of the 2014 World Cup, but not without some angst. Jurgen Klinsmann's team fell to Germany 1-0 on Thursday but advanced due to Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana.
The US had their worst game ever in a World Cup in terms of possession. Germany controlled 67.5 percent of the possession, the most they have had in the tournament so far. It was also the most the US have ever given up in a World Cup game. The previous record was the 2002 quarterfinal when Mexico had 66.3 percent possession against the US.
But all that matters is the result, and in that department, the USMNT were able to get the job done. Some other interesting facts from Thursday:

• The USA did not register a shot on target. This is the fourth time they have been able to do so in a World Cup game, joining the Brazil 1994 game and in 2006 against the Czech Republic and Italy.
• The Germans' passing accuracy of 91 percent was also the best percentage the US have ever given up in a World Cup game. The previous high was by Colombia in 1994 (87.3).
• Germany also had the best passing accuracy in the final third of any team to play USA in the World Cup. In fact it was their accuracy of 83 percent was the best of the World Cup so far.
• After controlling 88.6 percent of the possession in the first 10 minutes of the game, Germany controlled just 41 percent in minutes 10-15.
• The USMNT's four shots were not the fewest they have ever had in a World Cup game. That would be when they faced Brazil in the round of 16 in 1994.
• Thomas Müller's goal in the 55th minute came off a corner situation. This is the first time the USA have given up a goal off a corner in a World Cup game since 2002.
• For much of the game, the USA were unable to get out of their own half. Germany had 525 touches in the opponents' half, while the USA had 189.
• Omar Gonzalez had the most clearances, blocks, and interceptions in the game with 11. No German player had more than four.
• A note from the Portugal-Ghana game: Portugal became the first team in this tournament to win after playing in Manaus.
