Week in review: Seismic shakeup

Alecko Eskandarian lifted Chivas USA into second place with his game-winner against Real.

Marc Burch sent off for a foul on David Beckham along the touchline in the 63rd minute.

The Galaxy took advantage nine minutes from the end as Donovan corralled a loose ball and floated a soft chip to the right post where Peter Vagenas came in to softly side-foot a volley into the back of the net. Donovan then finished off the rout and his second hat trick of the season, again sent in alone on Crayton from a long ball by Klein, coolly slotting home for his league-leading 19th goal on the campaign.

At Rice-Eccles Stadium, Real were coming off a draw and a loss on a two-game road swing but had won three games in a row at home. Chivas USA saw their brief two-game winning streak come to an end 10 days previously in a 4-0 loss to New England.

RSL piled up the early chances, but couldn't find the back of the net. Yura Movsisyan had an apparent first-half goal ruled out for offside, and Andy Williams hit the post with a shot in the second.

Then in the 72nd minute, Chivas took advantage of a mistake for the winner. Chasing down a long ball headed for his own goal, RSL defender Nat Borchers collided with Nick Rimando as the 'keeper came out to collect, and Eskandarian raced in to take control and dribble the ball into the goal for the easiest of finishes and his third goal this season.

At Dick's Sporting Goods Park, the Rapids were coming off back-to-back shutout victories, which followed back-to-back shutout losses, while the Revolution were coming off their first win in four league games, the 4-0 drubbing of Chivas USA.

The Rapids owned most of the early exchanges and duly went ahead in the 42nd minute. The goal came through a likely source: Terry Cooke swung in a cross from the right flank and Colin Clark rose up to head home for his fourth goal on the year. It was the 10th assist of the season for Cooke.

But the Revolution pulled level just five minutes after the restart. Gabriel Badilla knocked a free kick from near halfway toward the Colorado penalty kick, and it took a deflection off a Rapids defender, falling right to Kenny Mansally, who calmly scooped it over 'keeper Preston Burpo for his first goal in four months.

At Crew Stadium, the Crew hadn't lost since early August, though seeing their four-game winning streak come to an end in a tie at Toronto the week before. The Red Bulls rebounded after seeing their six-game unbeaten string snapped with a win against Real Salt Lake.

The Red Bulls jumped on top early. Sizing up a free kick some 35 yards from goal, Juan Pablo Angel lashed his effort over the wall and inside the right-hand post for his 10th goal on the season, and eighth in the last 10 games.

But the Crew took control of the match with goals on either side of halftime. In the 41st minute, Frankie Hejduk squirted down the right and put in an arching ball aimed for the back post that sailed over goalkeeper Jon Conway and into the side netting for his first goal on the season.

Then in the first minute after the restart, Robbie Rogers went haring forward on the left before hammering a stunning drive that whistled into the upper corner from all of 30 yards away for his first goal in 16 matches back to May 10, his sixth on the year.

The Crew finished off the win the 85th minute when Eddie Gaven was sent into the area with a pass from Hejduk and put home an angled shot for his second goal of the year.

At CommunityAmerica Ballpark, the Wizards put an end to their four-game winless run with a shutout of the Los Angeles Galaxy the week before, while Toronto FC were winless in their last five and had just one win since June 14.

Toronto FC were held without a single shot on goal on the entire night. But the Wizards couldn't break through until the 63rd minute. TFC defender Tyrone Marshall, goalkeeper Greg Sutton and Kansas City striker Josh Wolff all came together in the area, and when Wolff went down, referee Baldomero Toledo awarded a penalty kick. Sutton guessed correctly, but Jack Jewsbury still put it past him for the opener.

Then with 11 minutes to go, Wolff put in a cross from the right flank and Kevin Souter snuck in front of a defender to get a touch on the ball and loop it high over Sutton. For Souter, signed after being discovered in an open tryout, it was his first professional goal.
