Save of the Week

Vancouver's Spencer Richey wins MLS Save of the Week for Week 3

Spencer Richey didn’t get a result in his MLS debut last Saturday, but the Vancouver Whitecaps goalkeeper picked up a decent consolation prize, winning MLS Save of the Week for Week 3 of the 2017 season.

Starting in place of the suspended David Ousted, Richey, 24, won the honor for his outstretched, one-handed diving stop on a clipped shot from Toronto FC’s Justin Morrow. The 66th-minute save kept the game knotted at 0-0, though Vancouver would go on to concede twice after Brek Shea was sent off to fall 2-0 to TFC at BC Place.

Richey’s stop took home 32 percent of the Save of the Week vote. Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando finished second with 22 percent of the vote, while Sporting Kansas City’s Tim Melia (20 percent), Columbus Crew SC’s Zack Steffen (18 percent) and Houston’s Tyler Deric (8 percent) rounded out the voting.

The Whitecaps are off this weekend, but will return to action next Saturday, April 1, when they host the LA Galaxy at BC Place.
