New England Revolution veteran goalkeeper Matt Reis could be out of action until next June after undergoing surgery Monday to repair the injured left quadriceps tendon that buckled him to the turf in last week’s playoff loss to Sporting Kansas City, the club announced.
Reis, 38, underwent the surgery to repair the torn tendon that he suffered in the final minutes of the Revs’ 3-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference Semifinals last Wednesday. He’s expected to miss 5-7 months of action, meaning he’ll almost certainly still be rehabilitating at the opening of next season, his 17th in the league.
Reis appeared in 12 regular-season matches this season, and went 7-0-4 on the year, becoming the first goalkeeper in MLS history to go undefeated after making 10 or more appearances in a season. He posted his career-best goals against average (0.72) and had five shutouts.
Reis holds almost every one of the club’s career goalkeeping records, including games played in goal (254), games started in goal (253), minutes played in goal (22,697), goals against average (1.31), wins (93), saves (989), shutouts (66) and saves percentage (72.3).
Bobby Shuttleworth, 26, started a career-high 23 games in net for the Revs this season, his fifth year with the club.
The Revolution saw their 2013 season come to an when the team lost its two-game, aggregate-goals MLS Cup playoff series with SKC. After taking a 2-1 lead in the first leg on Nov. 2, at Gillette Stadium, the Revs fell, 3-1, at Sporting Park to drop the series, 4-3, on aggregate.
It was the team’s first playoff appearance since 2009, and 11th postseason appearance overall.
