Shakhtar Donetsk needs win to stay in CL

DONETSK - Shakhtar Donetsk head into Tuesday's Champions League Group D encounter with Benfica knowing only a win will be enough to give them a chance of reaching the last 16 for the first time in their history.

A victory over their Portuguese opponents would be enough to take the Ukrainians through to the knockout phase if AC Milan beat Celtic.

Shakhtar currently lie three points behind the Glasgow outfit but have a better head-to-head record between the two sides.

Benfica are unlikely to roll over though, as they need a win to keep their European campaign alive.

With the last 16 already beyond their reach, Jose Antonio Camacho's side must win to secure third place and entry into the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.

Shakhtar had looked likely to qualify after opening their campaign with a 2-0 win over Celtic and a 1-0 win in Portugal.

However, Mircea Lucescu's side have since lost three straight games, twice to Milan and then last week going down to Massimo Donati's stoppage-time strike at Parkhead which gave Celtic a 2-1 victory.

Polish midfielder Mariusz Lewandowski believes luck was not on Shakhtar's side that night.

He said: "It is hard to say what qualities we were missing in Glasgow, especially as we conceded goals right at the end of both the first and second halves.

"We did not play that badly in defence and midfield, but that was not enough.

"We lacked a bit of luck; Celtic did not have too many attacks but had two chances and scored twice."

He added: "The final result does not seem fair to me."

Fernandinho returns from suspension for the hosts, while Benfica will be without Augustin Binya, who serves the second game of a six-match ban for his horror tackle on Celtic's Scott Brown on matchday four.

Camacho will also have to make do without Cristian Rodriguez as the Uruguay international picked up a thigh injury during the 1-0 SuperLiga defeat to Porto on Sunday.

Fabio Coentrao is still recovering from a knee strain, although Nelson could be set for a return from his thigh problem after making the bench on Sunday.
