Sacramento Republic FC make cheeky play after Commissioner Don Garber's shout-out | SIDELINE

Sacramento Republic FC are just a month away from their inaugural season in USL PRO. But the third-division expansion club hasn't been shy about its aims to reach Major League Soccer in the near future.

On Friday, the club tweeted out a photo of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson side-by-side with MLS president Mark Abbott with a cheeky caption.

The photo isn't new – it was snapped at last month's meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors in Washington, where Abbott gave a presentation along with executives from the National Football League and the NFL Players Union. And Johnson also happens to be the vice president of the Conference of Mayors.

But given MLS Commissioner Don Garber's remarks on Thursday that Sacramento has emerged as a possibility as a future expansion city, the Republic certainly had some fun circulating the photo.

(For the record, mayors from several of the other markets Garber referenced – such as San Antonio, Miami and Minneapolis – also attended the conference.)
