Ghana’s national team coach Avram Grant has set his sights on MLS as a prime ground for recruiting players thanks to the continued influx of Ghanaian players into the league.
SuperSport.com reported Wednesday that Grant plans to scout MLS games in person this season and that he and video analyst Michael Otchere have already taken in games, including those of New York City FC’s young midfielder Kwadwo Poku.
Also according to the report, the Israeli coach, who led Ghana to a second-place finish in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations after accepting the position last fall, will meet with Portland Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, who has declined invitations to the Black Stars since returning from last summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
A number of Ghanaian and Ghanaian-descended players play major roles in the league, including recent Chicago Fire Designated Player signing David Accam, Montreal Impact’s Dominic Oduro, Houston Dynamo’s Kofi Sarkokie, D.C. United’s Kofi Opare, New York Red Bulls’ Lloyd Sam and the Vancouver Whitecaps’ Gershon Koffie. The Timbers also recently signed Ghanaian winger Ishmael Yartey.
