Report: Ajax, US defender Sergino Dest drawing interest from Bayern Munich

Sergino Dest - USMNT - 2019

Sergino Dest’s breakout season with AFC Ajax could result in a move to German powerhouse Bayern Munich, according to a report from Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

They outline that the Bundesliga giants saw their €20 million offer for the US men’s national team outside back struck down this winter, though still desire his services as a potential summertime signing, when Ajax would be more willing to sell. Dest, 19, has made 27 appearances for Ajax this season across all competitions, plus has chipped in two goals and six assists.

Dest was born in the Netherlands, leading to a prolonged saga over which national team he’d represent. The attack-minded outside back ultimately chose the USMNT last October and has since made three appearances under head coach Gregg Berhalter.

Should Dest move to Bayern Munich for the 2020-21 season, he’d join several other American prospects at the German club. US youth national team defender Chris Richards has been with their reserves, while Taylor Booth is with the club’s U-19s. There’s also another North American connection, via Canada men’s national team star and Vancouver Whitecaps product Alphonso Davies, who is enjoying a breakout season at left back.

As for the last American player to feature for Bayern’s first team in an official competition? Attacking midfielder Julian Green, who managed four appearances from 2013-16 before departing FCB.
