Real Salt Lake lone undefeated MLS team entering Week 6 Saturday slate

Joao Plata - Real Salt Lake - March 12, 2016

Orlando City's last-minute loss to the Philadelphia Union on Friday night, their first setback of the season, left one undefeated team still standing in MLS.

Real Salt Lake, currently sitting in third place in the Western Conference with a 2-0-2 record (8 points), will look to preserve their unbeaten status in a tricky rivalry match against the Colorado Rapids (9:30 pm ET, watch on MLS LIVE).

After missing the playoffs last year, Real Salt Lake weren't fancied as a title contender by many observers entering the 2016 season. But their early-season record is likely to have changed some minds, especially with the schedule they've had to endure in their first four matches, including three challenging road games in Orlando (2-2 draw), at MLS Cup champions Portland Timbers (2-2 draw) and at West contenders Sporting Kansas City (2-1 RSL win).

RSL's four-match undefeated run has matched their unbeaten streak to start the 2011 season, when they won all four MLS matches to kick off the campaign. Although they did one better in 2015 (2-0-3 start), it didn't come close to RSL's all-time best start in 2014 when they went 6-0-6 in the first 12 matches of 2014.

RSL's longest undefeated runs to start a season:

  • 2014: 12 matches (6-0-6, 24pts)
  • 2015: 5 matches (2-0-3, 9pts)
  • 2011: 4 matches (4-0-0, 12pts)
  • 2016:4 matches (2-0-2, 8pts)
