Philadelphia Union 0, Columbus Crew SC 0 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

The Philadelphia Union hung tough against Columbus Crew SC, holding the early Eastern Conference leaders to a 0-0 draw at Talen Energy Stadium. Both teams avoided a first loss of the season, despite some solid scoring chances throughout the match.

Gyasi Zardes came closest for Crew SC, with a 51st-minute header going just wide, and with Federico Higuain sending him on mirror image runs into goal in the 27th and 64th minutes that were just denied.

Philadelphia had their chances as well, most notably from Alejandro Bedoya and David Accam, though many Union fans' eyes were on new Czech international Borek Dockal, who made his first start.

Three Things

THE BIG PICTURE:
While Columbus would have liked to have made it three wins in three contests, the road result put them atop the conference standings at match's end. Philadelphia followed up their home opener two weeks ago with a second result in two matches, similarly situating them well in the East.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH:  Zardes looked like he'd add to his three goals for the season, and take sole lead in the Golden Boot race, with his goal attempt midway through the second half. But Auston Trusty's defense and Andre Blake's save were enough to snuff out the opportunity.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Give it to the goalies: Blake and Zack Steffen weren't as tested as they might have been, but stood up to the goal threats they did face well, both earning their clean sheets.
