In search of some offensive help, the New York Red Bulls have signed a versatile player whose last name might ring a bell.
The Red Bulls announced Wednesday that they agreed to terms with winger/forward Bradley Wright-Phillips, younger brother of former England international Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The younger Wright-Phillips, 28, had been training with New York in recent weeks and now joins a group of forwards that already includes Thierry Henry, Fabián Espíndola, Péguy Luyindula, Andre Akpan and Amando Moreno.
“Since Bradley’s potential was first recognized by Manchester City and the England’s Under-20 side, he has proved to be a goal scorer of note, whether playing up front or as a winger,” Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said in a statement released by the club. “We are delighted to sign him. He will certainly add another dimension to our roster with his pace and technical ability.”
Wright-Phillips’ career started in 2004, when he graduated from Manchester City’s academy and played for the Premiership side until 2006. He then moved onto English club Southampton, where he amassed 111 appearances and scored 22 goals.
From 2009-11, Wright-Phillips featured for Plymouth Argyle before the former English Under-20 International moved to Charlton Athletic. At Charlton, Wright-Phillips scored 31 goals in 82 games. He was most recently at Brentford on loan, playing 15 matches and recording five goals.
