The New York Red Bulls have acquired center back Andres Reyes from Atlético Nacional, the club announced Tuesday. Reyes spent 2020 on loan with Inter Miami

Reyes, 21, made 13 starts with Miami last season, though the club opted not to pick up his purchase option this offseason. Reyes is a Colombian youth international, with 11 caps for the U-20 national team and another two with the U-23 side.

Prior to coming to MLS, Reyes made 19 appearances for Nacional.

“We’re pleased to welcome Andrés to our team,” Head of Sport Kevin Thelwell said in a club statement. “Andrés has the physical characteristics we like in our center backs, and a sharp mind for the game. He has experience in our league and the ability to contribute to team success while still growing into his full potential.”

Reyes gives the Red Bulls another option in central defense, alongside Aaron Long, Tim Parker, Amro Tarek and Sean Nealis

“I’m very happy for the agreement with Andrés, and that he chose our club,” said head coach Gerhard Struber. “He is a big talent, and his skills make the team stronger and more stable. He is hungry for success and ready to work very hard for it.”

The Red Bulls made the playoffs once again in 2020 despite somewhat of a down year, in which the club parted ways with head coach Chris Armas and appointed Struber. Struber made his MLS coaching debut in the club's playoff loss to eventual MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew SC.
