New England continue constructing roster

Seth Sinovic and New England face Toronto FC on Saturday.

New England continued constructing their roster for the 2011 campaign on Tuesday by retaining one player from their 2010 squad and selecting three potential additions in the Supplemental Draft.

Revolution defender Seth Sinovic will return to the club for a second season after the club announced it had signed him to a new deal on Tuesday morning. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, as per club and league policy.

Sinovic, 23, played in 20 matches for the Revs during his rookie season. The former Creighton defender operated primarily as a left back in 2010 and will expect to compete for playing time with Didier Domi and Chris Tierney at the position heading into the upcoming season.

In addition to retaining Sinovic, New England added to the burgeoning competition for roster spots by selecting Tulsa defender/midfielder Hunter Christiansen (sixth overall), Sacramento State midfielder Fernando Cabadas (24th overall) and Providence midfielder Andrew Sousa (42nd overall) in the Supplemental Draft on Tuesday afternoon.

The 23-year-old Christiansen spent his senior season with the Golden Hurricane as a central defender, though he featured frequently in midfield during his four years at Tulsa. The two-time Conference USA selection (third team in 2009, first team in 2010) scored nine goals and tallied 11 assists during his four seasons at the school.

Cabadas came off the board just two picks after Hornets teammate Ernesto Carranza joined Chivas USA. The former walk-on carved out a glittering career alongside Carranza as he collected nine goals and 19 assists during his 78 collegiate appearances. In his final two seasons with the Hornets, the 22-year-old Sacramento native earned first team all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) honors.

Sousa, 21, will vie for a spot with his hometown club after playing three seasons under former Revolution defender Chaka Daley at Providence. The Fall River, Mass., native started his college career at Limestone College (Gaffney, S.C.) before transferring back home to play for the Friars. In his 51 matches for Providence, Sousa compiled eight goals and seven assists.

All three Supplemental Draft selections will compete for a spot on the Revolution's 2011 roster, though none of the three players has signed a contract with the club or the league at the present time.

Cabadas, Christiansen and Sousa will join fellow camp invitees Zak Boggs, Jason Griffiths, Roberto Linck and Tim Murray and recent SuperDraft picks Ryan Kinne, Alan Koger and Steven Perry in the tussle for a prized spot in the squad when camp opens.
