MLS SuperDraft: Montreal Impact select Central Florida striker Romario Williams with third overall pick

PHILADELPHIA – After two years at the SuperDraft picking up pieces on their back line and in the midfield, the Montreal Impact got offensive on Thursday.

The Impact selected Central Florida striker Romario Williams with the third overall pick in the draft, giving head coach Frank Klopas’ side a talented Jamaican prospect and a member of the 2015 Generation adidas class.

Because of his status as GA player, Williams’ contract will not count against the Impact’s salary cap until he graduates from the program. He will, however, take up an international spot on the Impact’s roster.

Williams, 20, scored 18 goals and added five assists in 51 appearances in his three seasons at Central Florida. He was also named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore.

He also played for Jamaica at the 2011 Under-17 World Cup.

The Impact used their first-ever pick in franchise history in 2012 on forward Andrew Wenger before using their top picks in 2013 and 2014 on midfielder Blake Smith and defender Eric Miller, respectively.
