Mike Petke praises Dax McCarty for breaking New York Red Bulls records

Dax McCarty - New York Red Bulls - Solo shot, thumbs up

Dax McCarty broke a pair of long-standing New York Red Bulls records in recent weeks, and the man he surpassed for the top spot for each of them took some time to congratulate the midfielder on Thursday.

Former Red Bulls defender and head coach Mike Petke took to Twitter late on Thursday night to send a message full of praise to McCarty, who became the club's all-time leader in starts and minutes played earlier this month. The 29-year-old McCarty moved past Petke with 14,111 minutes played and 160 starts in recent matches. Petke had 14,060 minutes and 158 starts during his playing career.

The Red Bulls' captain, who played under Petke during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, responded a few hours later on Friday morning with a complimentary message of his own.

McCarty will likely add to his record totals this weekend when New York welcome the Philadelphia Union to Red Bull Arena on Saturday (7 pm ET; MLS LIVE) for a battle between Eastern Conference contenders.
