LA Galaxy 1, San Jose Earthquakes 0 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

After a largely dormant 81 minutes of soccer, Romain Alessandrini's goal broke through to hand the LA Galaxy a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes in the California Clasico on Friday at StubHub Center.

While both teams had a few half-chances in the game, the respective 18-yard boxes were largely uncharted territory. But Alessandrini found the breakthrough in the 82nd minute, as he continued a good individual play by Emmanuel Boateng by crushing a shot past San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell.

The Quakes almost tied up the game in the 90th minute off a second chance on a free kick, but Danny Hoesen's attempt was saved by David Bingham and clanged off the crossbar before it was cleared off the line by Alessandrini.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: The Galaxy's season has been at real risk of running adrift of the Western Conference contenders, so a victory was practically a must. The Quakes, however, will feel like they could have taken a point, or three, and will rue dropping the game to their rival.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH
: Of course it's the goal.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Alessandrini provided the two most critical plays on the night, scoring on one end and clearing the chance on the other, so he's the easy choice for the honor.
