Jonathan Osorio makes Toronto FC history in playoff-preserving win

Jonathan Osorio knows a thing or two about postseason soccer at BMO Field – and making history with Toronto FC.

On Wednesday, the 34-year-old Canada international scored his first goal of the season to help the Reds claim a 2-1 home win over D.C. United, keeping the club alive in the hunt for a first Audi MLS Cup Playoffs berth since 2020.

Osorio redirected Josh Sargent's shot into the net in the 64th minute, before Sargent struck an 86th-minute winner. In the process, Osorio became the first player in MLS history to score in 14 consecutive seasons with a single club.

Since scoring his first TFC goal against the LA Galaxy on March 30, 2013, Osorio was a fixture in the club's most successful era, highlighted by their historic 2017 treble of MLS Cup presented by Audi, the Supporters' Shield and the Canadian Championship.

“No,” Osorio told reporters after the match about celebrating the milestone. “You look at it, and it’s something that for sure is to be proud of, but honestly my focus right now is trying to make the playoffs for this team.

“It’s great, 14 seasons, playing and being able to contribute for this club that I love; I’ve said it many times. But right now, my focus is just helping this team get into the playoffs.”

Final push

Toronto FC now head into the penultimate matchday of the regular season against Atlanta United on Saturday (4:30 pm ET | Apple TV) just two points back of the Columbus Crew for the ninth and final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference.

The latest dramatic result gives them three wins in their last five games as they aim to return to the postseason.

“Our fans deserve it. It’s great to win at home always, and these fans are one of the best in the league,” Osorio added. “They’re amazing. The way they show up for the team, year in, year out, highs, lows, these fans deserve a competitive team.

“We’re doing everything we can to get this team into the playoffs and to give the fans what they deserve.”
