John Harkes predicts US will meet Argentina in Copa America final

At least one former American international thinks the US men’s national team is headed all the way to the final of the Copa América Centenario.


Longtime USMNT midfielder John Harkes, now the head coach of first-year USL sensation FC Cincinnati, took some Twitter questions during his the FC Cincinnati Coach’s Show on ESPN Radio 1530 on Tuesday night, revealing that he thinks the US will meet Argentina in the Copa America final on June 26.

Harkes made 90 career international appearances and played for the US at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and 1995 Copa América, where he led the US to an upset 3-0 win over Argentina and earned tournament co-MVP honors.


The US will begin their Copa América run next Friday, June 3, when they’ll open the tournament with a Group A contest against Colombia in Santa Clara, California. The US will take on Costa Rica in Chicago on June 7 before concluding the group stage on June 11 against Paraguay in Philadelphia.


Manager Jurgen Klinsmann will lead his team in a pair of friendly matches prior to the start of the tournament, with the USMNT set to face Ecuador in Dallas on Wednesday (8 pm ET; ESPN2, UniMas, UDN) before taking on Bolivia in Kansas City, Kansas on Saturday (8 pm ET; FS1, UniMas, UDN).
