Houston Dynamo hires Mike Toshack as goalkeeper coach

HOUSTON, TX - Former Vancouver Whitecaps Director of Goalkeeping Mike Toshack has been added to the Houston Dynamo coaching staff as the team's new Goalkeeper Coach, it was announced today.

Per MLS Policy, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"(Toshack) comes highly recommended to the Dynamo", said Head Coach Dominic Kinnear. "He has worked with our starting goalkeeper, Pat Onstad, in the past, so that obviously helps. In addition, (Toshack) has great soccer knowledge, and that makes him a good fit for our team and what we are trying to accomplish this year."

"Being a member of the Dynamo is a great opportunity for me", said Toshack. "I am really excited about joining (Dominic) Kinnear and (John) Spencer, especially after what they did with the team in 2006. I look forward to contributing and to working with Onstad and Zach Wells, both of whom I know well."

Toshack has coached goalkeepers for 20 years on 4 different continents. He is the former U-20 Canadian National Team Goalkeeper's Coach, and has worked as an assistant coach for the Montreal Impact and St. Lawrence University, Men's NCAA Division 3 Champions in 1999. He also holds his NSCAA Advanced Goalkeeper License, and has helped players from youth to Super Y to the professional ranks reach their potential in net.

While with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the United Soccer Leagues, Toshack was responsible for the training and development of the goalkeepers playing with the Men's professional team, as well as the reserve and Super Y teams. In addition to specific training of the Whitecaps keepers, Toshack also ran a full Whitecaps Goalkeepers Academy for boys and girls U-9 through U-17.

Toshack is expected to join the team before its first training session, which is scheduled for Monday, January 29th.
