GUADALAJARA, Mexico – It was a quiet night of action for Yanks down in Mexico in midweek action on Wednesday, although the playoff race is now down to the wire with each team having just two games to play.
DaMarcus Beasley’s Puebla finally cooled off Herculez Gomez in a vital 2-1 win over Estudiantes Tecos that keeps the hosts’ playoff chances alive.
Gomez, playing at his former club, failed to score for only the second time in his past six appearances. He did, however, earn his second straight start for Estudiantes and went the full 90, as did his fellow World Cup veteran Beasley for la Franja.
Puebla and Tecos have to win their remaining two games to have any chance of reaching the playoffs.
Michael Orozco Fiscal’s San Luis pulled off a 2-1 victory against Querétaro, moving los Guerreros to within one point of a playoff spot. US international Orozco Fiscal was back in the starting lineup after two games where he missed out and completed the full game, picking up a booking in the fifth minute.
Joe Benny Corona was an unused sub for Club Tijuana in their vital 2-0 victory over Jaguares in the club’s battle against relegation, as was Sonny Guadarrama for Atlante in their 1-0 loss against reigning champions Pumas UNAM.
Meanwhile, Isaac Acuña also warmed the bench in Club América’s 1-1 tie with Santos. Edgar Castillo did not participate in the game.
Pachuca’s 2-2 tie with Morelia on Tuesday puts los Tuzos in a playoff position in seventh, with José Francisco Torres, rehabbing a broken foot, still with a chance of featuring this season should Pachuca make the postseason.
