Behind the Badge: Family Fun Day

Victor McFarlane

This past Sunday, D.C. United hosted a Family Fun Day at Ketcham Elementary School. At the event, D.C. United publicly shared the club's vision for a stadium at Poplar Point and how it hopes to become a member of the Ward 8 community for the next 50 years. Enjoying the festivities were an estimated 1,200 parents and kids from the Ward 8 district and the surrounding areas. A barbeque was at the center of a large, free food tent and popcorn and cotton candy were also offered.

For the attendees there was plenty to do, including small-sided soccer scrimmages with D.C. United Youth Coach Judah Cooks and a Bingo tent where winners could win D.C. United merchandise - such as pennants and posters. Entertainment was provided in the form of the local band, The Cold Rice Band.

Guests at the event included Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Councilmembers Vincent Gray and Marion Barry. In a short speech, Marion Barry offered his support to D.C. United's development plan and also urged those in attendance to do the same. Also speaking at the event were D.C. United owner Victor MacFarlane and D.C. United President and CEO Kevin Payne.

Zach Walker Rules Subbuteo
D.C. United's own Zach Walker is the Subbuteo national champion for the second year in a row. The competition took place this past weekend in St. Louis, and United's ticket representative was successful in defending his title with a 1-0 victory over Daniel Cranston in the final.

Walker torched his way through his first round game 4-0, before needing overtime to take care of Paul Eyes 4-3. Rick Wilcox was little trouble for the D.C. United standout in the semifinals, as Walker bought his ticket to the finals with a 4-0 victory. Walker ended the tournament as champion and the competitions leading scorer, with 13 total goals. The next closest competitor tallied just seven goals.

Subbuteo is a table-top board game that involves flicking miniature soccer players, which stand on rounded weights, along a smooth, turf-like surface in an effort to deflect a large playing ball into the opposing players goal.

Guest Bogger
D.C. United defender Bobby Boswell was a guest writer on Dan Steinberg's Washington Post blog "D.C. Sports Bog" on Tuesday, July 24. Steinberg has been on vacation for an extended period of time, and many guest bloggers from other D.C. sports-centered websites have come in to share the workload. Boswell launched his own website BobbyBoswell.com this past March, and as a result got to fill in for the absent blogger. Boswell wrote a piece on the different celebrities he's met from the other D.C. sports teams. Read it here >
