It's safe to say that US national team striker Jozy Altidore's tenure at Sunderland has not gone according to plan. And that may mean he could be moving on in the next transfer window.
Altidore spoke with reporters in Boston on Wednesday about his future ahead of the USMNT's friendly on Friday against Ecuador in East Hartford, Conn. (7 pm ET, ESPN).
“I thought I’ve done everything I could this season to come in as fit as possible with the injury and try to make an impact when I’ve played,” he said.
“But like I said this four years I want to be part of the national team. Jurgen makes his message very clear, nobody is different, so if it doesn’t turn around then in January I’ll be looking to start elsewhere and make sure that I’m in his plans.”
Altidore has made six appearances across all competitions so far in his second season for the English Premier League side, and scored one goal, in the League Cup on Sept. 23 against Stoke. The 24-year-old captained the USMNT in their last game, a friendly against the Czech Republic in Prague in September that the Americans won 1-0.
