60 Minutes Sports examines USMNT and their World Cup quest | THE SIDELINE

Jurgen Klinsmann applauds prior to the USMNT-Mexico friendly

Say what you will about the quintessential American soccer player and his perceived lack of nuance for the game, but at least he’s honest.

In a sneak preview of a profile of the US national team airing on 60 Minutes Sports on Showtime later this week, USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard puts it simply when he’s asked if American players lack the nastiness their World Cup foes might have in spades when they meet later this summer.

“As Americans, we’re just very honest,” Howard says. “When it comes to soccer, we’ll kick someone and help him up, you know? Or we’ll get kicked and our leg is falling off, but we wanna be tough and we jump up. There are little moments when we can probably be more clever.”
