TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Extension
The Philadelphia Union and goalkeeper Matt Freese have agreed to a contract extension, the club announced Tuesday. Freese's new deal runs through 2022 and includes team options through 2024.
Freese, 22, has made seven appearances in goal for the club after signing his Homegrown contract ahead of the 2019 season. The former academy standout was given the nod in a must-win 2020 Decision Day match with starter Andre Blake out injured. Freese posted a shutout en route to the team clinching their first-ever trophy, the 2020 Supporters' Shield.
“Matt has proven to be a valuable member of our goalkeeper unit and the team as a whole,” sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a club statement. “Matt has demonstrated time and again he is ready whenever he is called upon and has been vital in some of the team’s most important games.”
Freese is currently with the US U-23 team as they continue their quest to qualify for the Olympics, set to be played this summer. He is in contention to be the starting goalkeeper. Prior to signing his MLS contract, Freese played two seasons at Harvard University.
