Chicago Fire FC announced on Thursday the club has signed Homegrown defender/midfielder Mauricio Pineda to a multi-year contract extension.

Pineda's new deal will will keep him under contract through the 2023 season with a club option for the 2024 season.

Pineda came up as a member of Chicago's academy before embarking on a standout collegiate career at the University of North Carolina from 2016-2019. He was signed in January as part of Chicago's blitz of 2020 Homegrown signings and had a solid rookie season, starting 23 games and playing a team-leading 2,022 minutes while scoring three goals and dishing out a pair of assists.

Pineda was called up to the US men's national team for the first time in December as the Yanks gathered in South Florida for a friendly with El Salvador.

“Mauricio’s potential was clear from the time he joined the team and he continued to show progress throughout a successful rookie campaign,” Chicago sporting director Georg Heitz said in a Thursday release. “He is a fundamental piece of the future for this club and we are excited to secure him long-term as he continues to develop.”
