San Jose Earthquakes forward Danny Hoesen is expected to miss the rest of the 2020 regular season after undergoing surgery to repair oblique and adductor muscle tears, the club announced Friday.

The procedure was performed by Dr. William Brown, and comes as the 29-year-old Dutchman appeared in just one of San Jose’s last six games. Hoesen has one goal in eight appearances this season, his least productive year since originally joining the Earthquakes in 2017 on loan from FC Groningen.

Hoesen has 23 goals and 12 assists in 104 total appearances for San Jose, and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2018. But he’s largely been used off the bench by head coach Matias Almeyda, as he’s turned to Andres Rios as their starting No. 9 this season.

San Jose return to action Saturday evening at home against the LA Galaxy in another chapter of the Cali Clasico (10:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US; on DAZN in Canada).
