Once a depth option, Fabian Herbers has made himself an essential piece in Chicago Fire FC's lineup. Now he's been rewarded for it.

The Fire announced on Tuesday that the club has signed the midfielder to a new contract that will keep him with the club through 2023, with an option for 2024.

“Fabian is a talented player who always works very hard for the team,” said Chicago Fire FC sporting director Georg Heitz in a statement. “His work rate, professional attitude and strong mentality are many of the traits that we look for in a player. He has fully earned this new contract, and we look forward to seeing his contributions to the team in 2020 and beyond.”

Herbers originally joined the Fire from the Philadelphia Union on Dec. 9, 2018. In two seasons with Chicago, the midfielder has made 22 appearances (11 starts) in regular season action, tallying three goals and one assist. In 2020, Herbers has appeared in each of the Fire’s first five matches, including three consecutive appearances in the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Prior to signing with the Fire, Herbers was selected sixth overall by the Union in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. In three seasons with Philadelphia, Herbers made 53 regular season appearances from 2016-18, tallying four goals and nine assists.
