On This Date: Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers produced scintillating 4-4 draw

In one form or another, the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers had played fiercely contested derby matches since their original NASL days back in the 1970s. On April 5, 2014 they combined for their first truly classic encounter on the MLS level.

Before a packed house at what is now Providence Park, all-time MLS and US national team great Clint Dempsey scored a hat trick and the Sounders fought from 2 goals down to earn a 4-4 draw in what was just an incredible atmosphere by any standard in the world. See more about the day from our own Matt Doyle.
