Vancouver Whitecaps, forward Tosaint Ricketts agree to contract extension

The Vancouver Whitecaps and forward Tosaint Ricketts have agreed to contract extension through the 2021 season, the club announced Tuesday. 


Ricketts, 32, joined the Whitecaps last summer, making eight appearances (six starts). He added one goal and two assists. He was with Toronto FC from 2016-18, making 51 appearances (17 starts) during his time with the club. He has 61 appearances with the Canadian national team, including 17 goals.


"We are building a roster here in Vancouver that includes a number of young professionals and it is important to have some experienced players who set the right tone and help guide the next generation,” sporting director Axel Schuster said in a club statement. “Tosaint is a great example for all our players, he provides leadership and at the same time knows when to have a little fun. We are very pleased to have Tosaint at our club.”


Ricketts has gone on a globetrotting career, with stints in Romania, Finland, Norway, Turkey, Israel, Tunisia and Bulgaria. 


“Vancouver is a place where I always wanted to be and words can’t express how grateful I am to be here,” said Ricketts. “I’m very excited for my future with this club.”


Rickets is another option up top for head coach Marc Dos Santos, alongside new Designated Player Lucas Cavallini, Fredy Montero and Theo Bair
