MLS Preseason 2020: Colorado Rapids top Chicago Fire FC 4-2 in exhibition matchup

Colorado Rapids and Chicago Fire in 2020 preseason action

The Colorado Rapids exploded for four goals after conceding the opener, eventually topping Chicago Fire FC 4-2 in a preseason matchup between the sides on Saturday.


CJ Sapong and Elliot Collier netted the goals for Chicago, with Andre Shinyashiki, Sam NicholsonKellyn Acosta and Nicolas Mezquida netting a goal apiece to pace the Rapids. Nicholson also added an assist.


Sapong continued his torrid preseason with the opening goal in the ninth minute -- the third straight exhibition match with a goal for the veteran forward.

Shinyashiki would start off an impressive response from Colorado in the 22nd minute, however, finishing off a feed from Younes Namli.


Nicholson then put the Rapids on top in the 53rd minute, finishing off a corner kick for the 2-1 lead.


Acosta added a third for the Rapids with a tap-in finish on the hour mark that was assisted by Nicholson, pushing the score to 3-1.


Chicago would pull one back on a 79th-minute finish from Collier off a corner kick, but Mezquida would strike for Colorado's fourth five minutes later to round out the 4-2 scoreline.


The Rapids move to 2W-2L-1D on the 2020 preseason with the result, with the Fire falling to 2W-2L-0D. Both teams will be back in preseason action on Wednesday, as Chicago are set to take on Toronto FC, with Colorado slated for a matchup against the LA Galaxy.
