Real Salt Lake have re-signed central defender Marcelo Silva, the club announced Monday.

Silva, 30, originally joined the club in 2017 from Real Zaragoza in Spain’s Segunda Division and has been a valuable member of the squad. He made 19 appearances last year, featuring in a defensive rotation amid a deep RSL backline.

“Marcelo has shown himself a standout center back at the MLS level. In the last three years he has proven that he can be a high-level contributor to a winning MLS side on a weekly basis,” RSL GM Elliot Fall said in a club statement. “In pairing him with Nedum Onuoha, Justen Glad, and Erik Holt, we have a group at that position that can compete with any in the league.”

Silva returns alongside Glad, Onuoha and Holt as options in central defense.

RSL continue to general balance roster continuity with a few key departures, as Nick Rimando retired, Brooks Lennon traded and Kyle Beckerman still a free agent. The biggest acquisition thus far this offseason for the club is goalkeeper Zach MacMath as they head toward 2020.
