2019 U.S. Open Cup — Fourth Round
Charleston Battery vs. Atlanta United
Fifth Third Bank Stadium — Kennesaw, Ga.
June 13 — 7 PM ET
For the third straight year, Atlanta United and the Charleston Battery meet in the U.S. Open Cup 4th Round, and once again Atlanta get to host, but only because an unplayable field meant the match was pushed by two days and moved from its originally scheduled venue at MUSC Health Stadium in Charleston.
For that reason, the match will be played behind closed doors and will not be open to the public. Fans can watch the live stream of the knockout match on ESPN+.
Atlanta United won both of the previous encounters at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, 3-2 in 2017 and 3-0 a year ago.
The Battery had to rally from a first-half deficit to defeat USL League One side Greenville Triumph 2-1 in the second round, with Ian Svantensson leveling in the 79th minute and scoring a stoppage-time winner.
In the third round, Charleston again hit the road and this time needed penalties to get past fellow USL Championship side Nashville SC, winning the shootout 3-0 after the teams finished deadlocked at 1.
The Battery have reached the Open Cup semifinals three times, losing to the Colorado Rapids 3-0 in 1999 and falling 1-0 in extra time to the Chicago Fire in 2004. They most famously made an inspiring run to the 2008 final, where they fell to D.C. United.
The Five Stripes enter their third competition of the season. In addition to MLS league action, they made a run to the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions League, where they were bounced by eventual champions Monterrey.
ATLUTD come into this game off back-to-back shutout victories — all eight of their 2019 league wins have come via the shutout — including a 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire on June 1. Josef Martinez struck for a first-half brace in the victory. Martinez has one USOC goal to his name, a 48th-minute equalizer in the 3-2 victory over the Battery in the 2017 fourth round.
Atlanta have never advanced past the Round of 16 of the US Open Cup in two previous appearances.
