TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Rumor
Korean midfielder Inbeom Hwang has been a useful addition for the Vancouver Whitecaps this season, and now there's word that they might be pursuing one of his international teammates in this summer's transfer window.
The new No. 9 I hear the Whitecaps are interested in is South Korean international Uijo Hwang. He plays for Gamba Osaka in the Japanese first division, and will available on a free at the end of this month.#VWFC | #WhitecapsFC | #MLS— 𝕲𝖑𝖆𝖘𝖘𝕮𝖎𝖙𝖞 (@GlassCityFC) June 5, 2019
Ui-jo Hwang is a 26-year-old striker with more than two dozen caps for South Korea. Starring alongside Inbeom Hwang and Tottenham star Son Heung-min, he was a key member of the side that won the gold medal at last year's Asian Games, winning the tournament's Golden Boot with nine goals in seven matches.
A standout with Gamba Osaka who previously plied his trade at Seongnam FC, Ui-jo has expressed a desire to test himself in leagues further from home and Inbeom's largely positive experience in Vancouver could make MLS an attractive option.
The two players are both clients of the same agent, and the 'Caps – who have scored 17 goals in their first 16 games, tied for third-fewest in the league – have at times found themselves in need of a No. 9 to spearhead the attack.
