Jozy Altidore ruled out for Toronto FC vs. DC United due to heel injury

Jozy Altidore made his return from injury last weekend off the bench, but the Toronto FC striker has a new injury setback.

Altidore was left out of the 18-man gameday roster for TFC's match on Wednesday against D.C. United, with the TSN broadcast noting during the game that the forward suffered a heel injury, something corroborated by Toronto-based reporter John Molinaro.

The TSN broadcast noted Altidore came out of training on Tuesday in the hope he could be ready by Wednesday, but it wasn't to be. Homegrown striker Jordan Hamilton started up top in the match.

After the game, which ended in a 0-0 draw, TFC head coach Greg Vanney spoke about the circumstances around Altidore's injury.

"Well, the last couple days in training he had been in and out, switched to running shoes to get his work in but his soccer shoes were bothering the heel," he told reporters. "It was kind of a game day sort of thing to see if he could turn the corner in a short period of time, but he said he felt the same as he did yesterday and yesterday, he didn’t make it through training. He didn’t feel like he could get it done so we had to go a different way."

Toronto have a short turnaround following the D.C. game, as they'll face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday (3 pm ET | TSN2, CTV in Canada, MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US). Altidore has five goals and two assists in just 391 minutes in league play this season.
