DC United's Wayne Rooney named October MLS Player of the Month

Wayne Rooney POTM - October

Apparently the LuchoRoo takeover of Major League Soccer is complete.

After Luciano Acosta bagged the September MLS Player of the Month presented by EA SPORTS™, his partner-in-goals Wayne Rooney claimed the October award, as voted on by members of the media.

Rooney helped drive D.C. United into the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, where they host Columbus Crew SC on Thursday (8 pm ET | FS1, UniMás, TVAS, TSN) at Audi Field in the Knockout Round.

D.C. United are 12-4-4 since Rooney, who finished the year with 12 goals and 7 assists, made his debut on July 14. The former England and Manchester United forward has gotten hotter as the temperatures are cooling.

The 33-year-old struck five of United’s seven goals in October as the Black-and-Red closed out the regular season on a 10-match unbeaten streak.

Rooney opened the final month of the MLS regular season with a second-half brace in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. His stunning free kick from distance, curled around a three-man wall, secured a 1-0 win at Toronto FC; Rooney also struck for a goal in each half of a 3-1 playoff-clinching win over New York City FC.

MLS Player of the Month presented by EA SPORTS™ is voted upon by a panel of select national media members in a process conducted by MLS Communications.
