WATCH: Giovinco sends Toronto FC into CCL semifinals with free-kick golazo

Sebastian Giovinco - Toronto FC - with CCL overlay

His team had just conceded an equalizer to mighty Tigres, their back line laboring under heavy pressure with their CONCACAF Champions League hopes on the line under hostile conditions in Estadio Universitario, one of the loudest and most daunting venues in Mexico.

Toronto FC needed a hero. And Sebastian Giovinco stepped up in iconic style.

Stepping up to a set piece nearly 30 yards out from Tigres’ goal, the Atomic Ant curled one of his trademark free-kick blasts into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman tangled in his own net, clutching at thin air as TFC’s star Italian striker wheeled away to celebrate.

It was the perfect free kick, and at the perfect time, earning the Reds a 2-1 lead and a priceless second away goal – which turned out to be enormously important, as Toronto surrendered two late goals to fall 3-2 on the night, but advance to the CCL semifinals via the away-goals tiebreaker after the series tied 4-4 on aggregate.
