LA Galaxy star Giovani dos Santos out 1-3 weeks with hamstring injury

Giovani dos Santos - LA Galaxy - anguish

The LA Galaxy will be without Giovani dos Santos for up to three weeks with a hamstring injury, coach Sigi Schmid confirmed on Wednesday.

In the 24th minute of a 2-1 loss to New York City FC Sunday at Yankee Stadium, Gio got briefly tangled with NYCFC defender Alexander Callens at the top of the box as he chased after a ball over the top by Jorgen Skjelvik. He continued his run, but fell to the turf over Sean Johnson, who dove at the ball at the edge of his six-yard box.

Schmid took him off at halftime with Jonathan dos Santos assuming his role as the LA Galaxy’s No. 10. Following his injury, Gio was not called in for the Mexican national team's pre-World Cup friendlies against Croatia and Iceland later in March.

“It’s somewhere in between one and three weeks. We just have to see,” Schmid said. “He wants to get back out there and play. We just have to do the best that we can do in terms of getting him ready. He injured himself in the game at about the 25th minute and tried to play through it.

"It shows his character that he wanted to try to contribute, but we said at halftime that it was better to take him out. It rules him out for Mexico at this stage, but hopefully, we’ll get him back in time for the LAFC game [on March 31].”

MLS Fantasy Impact: With Gio dos Santos ($8.2) out, alternatives include Diego Rubio ($7.6) or Christian Ramirez ($8.5). Start playing!
