Report: Schalke keen on DC United academy product Eryk Williamson

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

US youth international Eryk Williamson could end up forgoing his D.C. United academy ties to sign with Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04, according to a report from Metro's Kristian Dyer, who also notes that D.C. are "still very much in the mix" to sign the 20-year-old.

Williamson played in all five of the US's matches at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, starting in four. Collegiately, he led Maryland with six goals and added five assists in what was a disappointing 2017 season for one of the NCAA's soccer powers.

According to Dyer, other European clubs could also be interested in Williamson, who is turning pro after his junior year. And United remain a possibility to ink Williamson to a Homegrown Player deal as an academy alum, much how they did with former Wake Forest midfielder Ian Harkes this time last year.

But Williamson and Schalke appear to have mutual interest, with a source telling Dyer that a deal could happen in a week to 10 days if it continues. If that happens, Williamson could join former US U-20 teammate Weston McKennie, who at 19 years old has already become a regular with Schalke's first team.
