Goal of the Matchday

NYCFC's David Villa wins final AT&T Goal of the Week for 23rd goal of year

David Villa just missed out on winning the MLS Golden Boot, finishing one goal behind Bradley Wright-Phillips despite scoring in the final seconds of New York City FC’s final regular-season game.

But that goal did earn Villa something else: AT&T Goal of the Week honors.

The goal put an exclamation mark on NYCFC’s 4-1 Decision Day win over Columbus Crew SC as Villa took a pass from Frank Lampard just outside the box and blasted a shot into the top corner of the net for his 23rd goal of the season.

Villa’s rocket got 54 percent of the vote in the final of the bracket, barely edging another rip from just outside the box from the Vancouver Whitecaps' Pedro Morales. Villa’s strike had previously defeated goals from Orlando City SC’s Kaká and the New England’s Revolution Diego Fagundez.

It was the second Goal of the Week honor in the past month for the NYCFC star, who also won in Week 30 for a tough-angle shot vs. Houston.

Villa and NYCFC now turn to their attention to the club's first playoff game as they prepare to face Toronto FC in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Sunday (7 pm ET, FS1, TSN in Canada).
