One day after Orlando City’s Kevin Molino bagged a hat trick for Trinidad and Tobago, Seattle Sounders star Nicolas Lodeiro kept the party going on Thursday, when he scored the first goal in Uruguay’s 3-0 win against Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo.
The Designated Player put the hosts on the board in the 29th minute, when he made a trailing run into the box and powered a looping Luis Suarez past the Venezuela ‘keeper with a diving header from 10 yards out.
Lodeiro departed in the 67th minute of the match. Uruguay, who will play at Colombia on Tuesday, now sit in first-place in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying with 19 points through nine matches.
Ecuador also picked up a win on Thursday, though FC Dallas midfielder Carlos Gruezo didn’t get off the bench in their 3-0 home win against Copa America Centenario champions Chile. Ecuador moved into third in the CONMEBOL standings with the result; they’ll play at Bolivia on Tuesday.
Molino notched his hat trick and San Jose Earthquakes attacker Cordell Cato scored as Trinidad and Tobago beat the Dominican Republic 4-0 in a 2017 Caribbean Cup qualifier on Wednesday night.
Molino scored in the 14th, 18th and 60th minutes and Cato tallied in the 30th as the Soca Warriors started their Caribbean Cup qualification campaign with a home win.
