FC Dallas 2, Colorado Rapids 1 | 2016 US Open Cup Match Recap

Fabian Castillo - Maxi Urruti - FC Dallas - June 29, 2016

FC Dallas outlasted the Colorado Rapids in the Round of 16 of the 2016 US Open Cup on Wednesday, winning 2-1 in 120 minutes of action at Toyota Stadium.

Substitute Maxi Urruti gave Dallas the lead in the 96th minute, as he took the ball, dribbled into the box, and sent a tightly angled shot on goal to beat Zac MacMath and fully complete the host side's comeback.

The Rapids got on the board in the 38th minute, as Dillon Powers played a ball out wide to substitute Marlon Hairston, who joined the fray early due to an injury to Dillon Serna. Hairston's low cross was poked into the upper 90 by Dominique Badji to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

FC Dallas tied up the game in the 64th minute, as Fabian Castillo had some trickery along the sideline, with Rapids teammates Micheal Azira and Mekeil Williams colliding into each other, clearing the way for Castillo. After dribbling up into the box alone, Castillo sent a square pass to Mauro Diaz, who tapped in the goal to make it 1-1.

In the second half of extra time, Urruti had a chance to score the insurance goal, but his shot bounced off the crossbar. In the final seconds, Jared Watts had a open look in the box for Colorado, but Jesse Gonzalez made the vital save to prevent the game from going to penalties.

FC Dallas will next face the Houston Dynamo in Houston on July 20 in the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open Cup.
