Chivas USA 0, Vancouver Whitecaps 0 | MLS Match Recap

CARSON, Calif. – The Vancouver Whitecaps held off a determined Chivas USA side Saturday night to earn a scoreless draw and extend their unbeaten streak to six games.

There weren’t many golden opportunities for either side, as Vancouver notched their third straight shutout and the hosts were blanked for the fourth straight week.

Chivas USA squandered a couple of opportunities in the second half. In the 74th minute, Erick “Cubo” Torres misfired from just inside the box after a centering pass from Mauro Rosales trickled out to the edge. About 10 minutes earlier, his header off a Rosales feed went directly to goalkeeper David Ousted, who made an easy save.

Vancouver had a good look in the 75th minute, but Kekuta Manneh’s shot from distance proved too ambitious and sailed onto the tarp covering the StubHub Center bleachers.

The Whitecaps’ last loss came July 20 to the same Goats, whose defense bounced back after having allowed nine goals in their previous four matches.

But the Chivas USA attack again lacked punch, with their scoreless drought extending to a season-worst 366 consecutive minutes. The debut of forward Félix Borja, whose loan move from Ecuadorian side Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito was announced earlier in the week, was rather uneventful as he made the start alongside Torres atop the Chivas USA formation.

The Whitecaps maintained their nine-point lead on last-place Chivas USA in the Western Conference standings and remain in the fifth and final playoff spot.

In the first half, Torres corralled a loose ball in the 13th minute, but couldn’t finish from close range as Ousted gobbled up the attempt. The MLS All-Star had another strike from about 18 yards out, but Ousted made a diving catch.

Chivas USA (6-11-5) did continue their success against the Whitecaps after earning four points from their previous two matchups against Vancouver. They earned a draw in the second week of the season and beat the Whitecaps at BC Place, 3-1, last month.

The Whitecaps had a scoring chance in the 28th minute, but a header from Omar Salgado that appeared destined for the back of the net was punched away by Dan Kennedy, who recorded his fourth shutout of the year.

The Whitecaps look to continue their unbeaten streak next week against the LA Galaxy in the same venue. Chivas USA will hit the road for the fifth time in seven weeks to face the New England Revolution on Saturday. Men of the Match
