Goal of the Matchday

Portland Timbers' Gaston Fernandez tops Patrick Mullins by a hair for AT&T MLS Goal of the Week

Gaston Fernandez became the latest player to win the MLS AT&T Goal of the Week award on Friday, but it wasn't a walk in the park by any stretch of the imagination.

Fernandez's impressive first-minute flick for the opener in the Portland Timbers' 3-2 win vs. D.C. United last Satuday edged out New England Revolution rookie Patrick Mullins for Week 9's honors by a little more than one percent. Mullins scored on a bomb from distance to help New England top Toronto FC, 2-1, but that strike wasn't enough to beat out the Timbers striker in one of the tightest races of the season.

Fernandez earned 37.7 percent of the vote, while Mullins claimed 36.58 percent.

Final Votes (Week 9):

1. Gaston Fernandez (POR): 37.7%
2. Patrick Mullins (NE): 36.58%
3. Vicente Sanchez (COL): 10.26%
4. Pedro Morales (VAN): 9.96%
5. Giles Barnes (HOU): 5.5%
