Jack McInerney, Philadelphia Union (May 11, 2013)

Red-hot Philadelphia Union striker Jack McInerney grabs second straight Player of the Month award

Make that two in a row for Jack McInerney.

For the second straight month, McInerney was voted the MLS Player of the Month. The Philadelphia Union forward scored three times in five May games to raise his season total to nine, and he is currently tied with Montreal Impact striker Marco Di Vaio for the league lead in goals. (See how the North American Soccer Reporters voted here.)

The 20-year-old McInerney immediately carried over his impressive scoring ways from April into this month, netting the lone goal in the Union's 1-0 road win over the Chicago Fire on May 11. It was deja vu for McInerney seven days later, as he once again scored the winner in a 1-0 home victory over the Fire. McInerney closed out the month with another goal in a 5-3 defeat to the Impact.

McInerney narrowly won the award for May, edging out Portland Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts by one vote (6-5). Di Vaio and New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill each earned three votes and Seattle Sounders forward Eddie Johnson, Portland Timbers attacker Rodney Wallace, and LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane all had one vote.

McInerney and the Union will be back in action on Saturday, as they travel to face Toronto FC in an Eastern Conference affair at BMO Field.
