AMSTERDAM – Brad Guzan become just the fifth American to win club MVP honors in the English Premier League by taking Aston Villa's Player of the Season prize home from their awards banquet on Tuesday.
The Chicago native also won the Terrace Trophy, given to the team's top performer by the supporters. Guzan joined Clint Dempsey, Brad Friedel, Stuart Holden and Brian McBride as the only US internationals to claim a club Player of the Season award in England's top flight since the Premier League began in 1992.
Guzan took over the starting role from Shea Given two games into the season and has worked every league contest since. The former Chivas USA star has posted six wins in the last eight matches, leading Villa from the relegation zone to the brink of safety.
Fourth in the EPL in saves with two games remaining, the 28-year-old is currently being linked with interest from West Ham United.
