Robin van Persie meets his match: Was John Wolyniec's wonder-strike in 2003 better?

Robin Van Persie vs. John Wolyniec

Which is the better goal: Wolyniec or Van Persie?

Robin van Persie and John Wolyniec have more in common than a few premature grey hairs.

If they're calling Monday's goal by van Persie a Goal of the Century candidate – it came in a 3-0 win that clinched Manchester United's 20th English title, and beat US No. 2 Brad Guzan – then Wolyniec is also definitely in the mix, right there with the Red Devils star forward.

Back in 2003 Wolyniec, who then played for New York, scored a very comparable goal that not only beat the Columbus Crew at the old Giants Stadium, but did so on the last kick of the game.

Instead of Wayne Rooney serving a ball from the opposite half, it was Amado Guevara. But unlike van Persie, who had a five-foot cushion from the nearest defender, Wolyniec had two Crew defenders tight on him and a goalkeeper on his line. Yet the Staten Island, N.Y., native still found the top right corner.
