Troy Perkins’ reaction save kept Seattle’s Fredy Montero from a hat trick last Sunday and won the MLS Save of the Week for Week 17.
The Portland goalkeeper managed to deny an open header from Montero from just four yards away, keeping it out initially before pouncing again to prevent it from trickling into the net. The 87th-minute save kept the Timbers’ deficit at just one and earned a well-deserved ovation from the rowdy Portland faithful.
It was Perkins’ second Save of the Week honor of the campaign, beating out Colorado’s Matt Pickens, whose 95th-minute stop-and-start acrobatics saved both a goal, and a point, for the Rapids in their 1-1 road draw with Sporting Kansas City.
