Wayne Rooney named captain of DC United

Wayne Rooney - Referee - calm discussion

Wayne Rooney has played just three games for D.C. United, but on Saturday he is set to take over as D.C. United's captain, as  reported Friday by the Washington Post. His first match wearing the armband should against the Colorado Rapids (8 pm ET | TV & streaming info).

Rooney has only been with the the Black-and-Red for a short time but is no stranger to the armband, having worn it for years for England and Manchester United. His ascension so quickly to the role at D.C. is helped partly by the fact that coach Ben Olsen had left the role open to begin the season. (Defender Steve Birnbaum had been listed as captain in lineups, but did not wear the armband on the field.)
